Nottingham Chinese Independent Film Festival (NCIFF), organised by the Department of Culture, Film and Media, University of Nottingham, will be held in Nottingham from 16th to 18th of May, 2014. This event is part of the 10th Anniversary of Chinese Independent Film Festival UK Celebration brought together by three UK institutions: Newcastle University, the University of Nottingham and Chinese Visual Festival, London. It showcases award-winning independent Chinese films produced in recent years and aims to establish a dialogue between film curators, researchers, filmmakers and audience in and outside China. This event contributes to the AHRC Chinese Film Festival Studies Network, of which University of Nottingham is a member. The event is funded by Faculty of Arts’ Dean’s Fund and the Centre for Contemporary East Asian Cultural Studies, University of Nottingham. Broadway Cinema Nottingham is the industry partner for the event, and the Creative Student Network (CSN) contributes to the organisation of the event.
The Festival features a public event on the University Park campus on 16 May and three days of film screenings at the Broadway Cinema, Nottingham. It will showcase a dozen award-wining independent films from the People’s Republic of China produced in recent years, including four feature films, three documentaries and five animation films, curated by Dr Sabrina Yu (Newcastle), Lydia Dan Wu (Newcastle), and Dr Hongwei Bao (Nottingham). It will also bring two well-known Chinese independent film directors, Pema Tseden (director of Old Dog, 2011) and Feng Yan (director of Bing’ai, 2007), from China to Nottingham to discuss their films with the audience, with Dr Luke Robinson (Sussex) and Dr Mark Gallagher (Nottingham) chairing the Q and A sessions.
