Sabrina Yu, one of our network members, has organised a celebration and tour of the the China Independent Film Festival in the UK. The China Independent Film Festival (CIFF) is one of the longest-running indie film festivals in China. With its commitment to independent thinking and freedom of expression, the CIFF serves as the most important platform for showcasing Chinese indie films in China. This event celebrates its tenth anniversary and will take place in Newcastle from 12th-15th May 2014.
The four-day event in Newcastle features retrospective screenings of CIFF award-winning films, an archival exhibition on the history of the CIFF and a workshop ‘ Film Festival in Focus’ which brings together the directors of CIFF and Edinburgh International Film Festival and a group of important scholars in the field. The audience will enjoy a festival-like celebratory atmosphere and have the chance to see the most exciting collection of Chinese independent documentaries, fictions and animations. We are also delighted to welcome the filmmakers Pema Tseden and Feng Yan, who will be travelling to Newcastle to introduce and discuss their films Old Dog and Bing’ Ai (respectively). All the screenings, exhibition and workshop are open to the public with free admission. Advanced booking is required.
The screenings of documentaries and fictions and the screenings of animated films will then go on tour to Nottingham – where they will screen at the Broadway Cinema – and London – where they will screen in tandem with the Chinese Visual festival – respectively.
