Sally Jane Norman is Professor of Performance Technologies and founding Director of the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts at Sussex, which is designed to seed and host interdisciplinary research and teaching, offering a platform for academic engagement with wider audiences and partners. Sally Jane teaches on Music & Sonic Media and Art History programmes, supervises an interdisciplinary cohort of largely practice-led PhD students, and develops cross-campus research. Her theatre and performance work (Doctorat de IIIe cycle and Doctorat d’état, Institut d’études théâtrales, Université de Paris III) moves across theory and practice, art and technology, engaging with questions of embodiment and liveness. Before joining Sussex in 2010 Sally Jane was founding director of Culture Lab, Newcastle University’s digital research lab; she was previously Director of the Ecole européenne supérieure de l’image (Angoulême/ Poitiers), and European Framework Programme Research Associate at the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie, Karlsruhe. She contributes to numerous national and international advisory boards, including the Vida Art & Artificial Life programme she helped launch at the Telefonica Foundation, Madrid in 1999. Part of her performance technologies research has been undertaken at the International Institute of Puppetry, Charleville-Mézières, the Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music in Amsterdam as Artistic Co-Director (1998-2000), and with Bennett Hogg since 2004 via the Newcastle-based Music & Machines network.
