While narrative has always had a place on radio, the beginning-to-end listening nature of podcasting means that it has become an even more important characteristic of our new audio medium.\u00a0 It is worth noting that the producers of benchmark podcasts during podcasting\u2019s so called \u201cGolden Age\u201d are more than impressionistic and intuitive about their narrative constructions.\u00a0 This episode of\u00a0For Your Ears Only<\/i>\u00a0examines the critical grounding of narrative podcasts in Roland Barthes\u2019s\u00a0S\/Z<\/i>, Robert McKee\u2019s\u00a0Story<\/i>\u00a0and Tvetan Todorov\u2019s \u201cThe 2 Principles of Narrative,\u201d and details the podcast structures born out of them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our cultural obsession with well-crafted audio stories has been steadily increasing since the birth of podcasting. Will we ever lose the thrill of a good narrative or tire of familiar formulas? \u00a0Most of today\u2019s best podcasters don\u2019t think so. In this episode we\u2019ll unpick arcs, reflect on moments of reflection and hear ideas on \u2018story\u2019 from Ann Heppermann, Ellen Horne and Jad Abumrad.<\/span><\/p>\n
