[&#8230;]\u00a0Radio allows an opportunity for many forms of sound art to coalesce in one space. <a href=\"http:\/\/radioactiveinternational.org\/smithereens-silence\/\"><em>Smithereens \u2013 Silence<\/em><\/a>\u00a0was \u2018aired\u2019 as a \u2018live\u2019 show and now is available to <a href=\"http:\/\/radioactiveinternational.org\/smithereens-silence\/\">stream as a podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">[&#8230;]\u00a0Here, I want to reflect on how a radio programme can be made about silence when, as a medium, it is all about representing sound. I tease out why I needed to make such a programme and what the benefits of such a show are. To begin to consider these issues it is first worth considering what silence is and how it has been previously represented in the audio-visual arts, alongside how it is considered in political, philosophical and spiritual terms. [Liz Greene,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/sequence5\/archive\/sequence-5-1\/\"><em>SEQUENCE<\/em>\u00a05.1, 2016<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We are delighted to present the latest issue of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/sequence\/about-sequence\/\" target=\"_blank\">SEQUENCE<\/a><em>:<\/em>\u00a0Serial Studies in Media, Film and Music,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">REFRAME<\/a>\u2018s experimental, peer-reviewed, and\u00a0<em>sequential<\/em>\u00a0edited-collection format.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/sequence5\" target=\"_blank\">SEQUENCE Five:<\/a>\u00a0A<em>bout Silence <\/em>offers its readers, and potential interlocutors,\u00a0space for reflection on, and discussion of, notions of silence, and in particular on forms of creative and critical practice which turn on as well as treat silence &#8211; as a space of creativity <em>and<\/em> criticality. The inaugural contribution to\u00a0this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/sequence5\" target=\"_blank\">issue<\/a>, and to this topic,\u00a0is by <a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/sequence4\/about\/contributors\/\" target=\"_blank\">Liz Greene<\/a>, an academic and sound practitioner whose main research interests are in the theory, history and practice of film sound, currently based at Dublin City University. In her essay &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/sequence5\/archive\/sequence-5-1\/\">Silence<\/a>,&#8217; Greene focuses on a piece of her internet radio practice as a space in which to &#8220;address silence and silencing in a medium rarely considered for such questions and reflections.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>As usual, as we are sequentially inviting responses to the first entry in this iteration of SEQUENCE, Greene\u2019s article also constitutes a\u00a0<em>Call for Contributions<\/em>\u00a0for further\u00a0<em>About Silence\u00a0<\/em>sequences. Multimedia responses of all kinds are also very much encouraged. But it would be worthwhile to discuss any substantial idea\u00a0with us at an early stage in your planning. But there are no editorial prescriptions on length or content, except that your work should be some kind of \u2018sequential response\u2019. If you don\u2019t want to take part\u00a0right away, you can still enter the \u2018chain\u2019 of responses later on.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to offer a more concise response, there is also the option of leaving a comment in the moderated stream at the foot of each SEQUENCE Five\u00a0entry.
