Jan 1 \u2014 1796.<\/em>\u00a0This day \u2014 my first on the light-house \u2014 I make this entry in my Diary, as agreed on with De Gr\u00e4t. As regularly as I can<\/em>\u00a0keep the journal, I will \u2014 but there is no telling what may happen to a man all alone as I am \u2014 I may get sick, or worse\u2026 So far well! [\u2026] My spirits are beginning to revive already, at the mere thought of being \u2014 for once in my life at least \u2014 thoroughly\u00a0alone<\/em> [\u2026].<\/p>\n

I could half fancy there was some peculiarity in the echo of these cylindrical walls \u2014 but oh, no! \u2014 this is all nonsense.<\/p>\n

Jan.2<\/em>. I have passed this day in a species of ecstasy that I find impossible\u00a0to describe. [\u2026] The wind lulled about day-break, and by the afternoon the sea had gone down materially\u2026 Nothing to be seen, with the telescope even, but ocean and sky, with an occasional gull.<\/p>\n

Jan.<\/em>\u00a03. A dead calm all day. Towards evening, the sea looked very much like glass. A few sea-weeds came in sight; but besides them absolutely\u00a0nothing<\/em>\u00a0all day \u2014 not even the slightest speck of cloud\u2026<\/p>\n

Occupied myself in exploring the light-house\u2026 It is a very lofty one \u2014 as I find to my cost when I have to ascend its interminable stairs \u2014 not quite 160 feet, I should say, from the low-water mark to the top of the lantern. From the bottom\u00a0inside<\/em>\u00a0the shaft, however, the distance to the summit is 180 feet at least: \u2014 thus the floor is 20 feet below the surface of the sea, even at low-tide\u2026<\/p>\n

I should feel myself secure\u00a0in it during the fiercest hurricane that ever raged \u2014 and yet I have heard seamen say occasionally, with a wind at South-West, the sea has been known to run higher here than any where with the single exception of the Western opening of the Straits of Magellan.<\/p>\n
