I turn to him and ask: \u201cWhat are you publicizing?\u201d \u201c<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/80172145\">Diablero<\/a><\/em>,\u201d he answers, \u201cthe new Netflix series. Do you want one?\u201d I nod and he hands me the free daily <em>masporm\u00e1s<\/em> covered with an ad for the series. A few weeks ago, on that same strip, a young (mestizo?) woman gave me another piece of Netflix advertising: a Roji guide to the locations of <em>Roma<\/em> with beautiful black-and-white stills of Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), the young indigenous protagonist. Months ago, there were multiple posters for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/80160935\">La casa de las flores<\/a><\/em>, the series that brought back 1980s &amp; 90s Televisa star Veronica Castro. Earlier in the year, metro stations carried ads for <em>Luis Miguel, la serie, <\/em>a weekly Netflix marketed and distributed series that was such a hit I saw \u201cI Hate You, Luisito Rey\u201d T-shirts. A poster for <em>Roma<\/em> carried the tag line \u201cRemember\u201d (Recuerda). Some ads for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt8045690\/\">Luis Miguel, la serie<\/a><\/em> invited people to fill in the blanks of lyrics to his songs. What to make of these nostalgic Mexican media images all associated with the Netflix brand that have gone from Luis Miguel to indigenous nannies, with an aging telenovela star and Mexican <em>Narcos<\/em> in-between?<\/p>\n<p>I saw <em>Roma<\/em> in a Mexico City art house theater (actually cheaper than commercial venues). Ten minutes before the screening, an older man walked out angrily calling some audience members monkeys (changos). His outburst had been triggered by the noise of two hipster-looking couples behind him, eating popcorn packaged in cellophane bags. Later, a young female employee offered paper bags to replace the noisy cellophane. There is a lot of silence in <em>Roma<\/em>, she explained. The invitation to silence was the latest suggestion on how to \u201cproperly\u201d experience <em>Roma<\/em>. Critics recommended watching it in a movie house rather than streamed at home. Reviews and marketing campaigns appealed to the personal (Cuar\u00f3n\u2019s interviews, the memories of film critics, the hashtag #MiRoma) and collective (\u201cRoma unites us,\u201d the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.diariodemexico.com\/\"> cinem\u00f3vil<\/a>, the screening at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalpolitico.com\/2018\/12\/roma-los-pinos\/\">Los Pinos<\/a>, the hashtag <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eluniversal.com.mx\/espectaculos\/cine\/cuaron-invita-proyectar-roma-en-casas-y-escuelas-da-banderazo-romaton\">#Romat\u00f3n<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>There was also that \u201cRecuerda\u201d tag line, though clearly not aimed at me \u2013 a light-skinned Puerto Rican living in Mexico City \u2013, which made me wonder: what am I to remember?<\/p>\n<p><em>Roma <\/em>reminded me of a close male friend who moved to Mexico City to work and send money to his family. Despite his financial need, he recently rejected a work offer from the middle-class owners of the restaurant in which he worked. The couple had been nice and allowed him to stay for \u201cfree\u201d in an apartment they used for storage. My friend, however, knew their niceness came with obligations. After the restaurant closed, \u201cel se\u00f1or\u201d assumed he would agree to work during irregular hours and didn\u2019t understand why my friend no longer wanted to live in a \u201cfree\u201d place filled with equipment from a shut-down restaurant.<\/p>\n<p><em>Roma<\/em> triggered cinematic memories, though not necessarily of the <a href=\"http:\/\/literalmagazine.com\/notas-sobre-roma-de-alfonso-cuaron\/?fbclid=IwAR1QuSM8rP8HHxzX4qTRXtk-6wAjRc2G_vzowkE2j_T-GsVtvSNbBQ8lfEA\">European auteurs<\/a> that Mexican reviewers have favored to praise the film. <em>Roma <\/em>unexpectedly brought to mind <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt5221584\/\">Aquarius<\/a><\/em> (Kleber Mendon\u00e7a Filho, 2016), a Brazilian film that also deals with memories and centers on a woman whose beauty and charisma largely carry the movie. Despite their aesthetic differences, and the casting of an older movie star instead of a young indigenous \u201cnon-actor,\u201d both films have been acclaimed for addressing class and race differences from the viewpoint of an enlightened and sympathetic light-skinned\/white (upper) middle-class.<\/p>\n<p>This viewpoint is shared by some Mexican film critics whose rave reviews Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n has shared through Twitter. They link their visual and aural pleasures to memories of growing up middle class in Mexico City. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/es\/2018\/12\/14\/opinion-roma-cuaron-krauze\/\">Enrique Krauze<\/a> writes his family history \u201cis as typical as his [Cuaron\u2019s]. It is the history of the Mexican urban middle class.\u201d Ricardo Raphael enthuses <em>Roma<\/em> \u201cis an immense mirror from which it is impossible to escape.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/literalmagazine.com\/notas-sobre-roma-de-alfonso-cuaron\/\">Miguel Cane<\/a> states: \u201cWe all had a Cleo in our life if we were middle-class Mexicans in that period.\u201d An interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letraslibres.com\/mexico\/revista\/entrevista-alfonso-cuaron-roma-queria-honrar-el-tiempo-y-el-espacio-que-los-lugares-dictaran-lo-que-iba-pasar\">Fernanda Solorzano<\/a> starts with the critic and Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n bonding over their nannies while discussing <em>Roma<\/em>\u2019s connection to <em>Y tu mam\u00e1 tambi\u00e9n<\/em>. Memories of having domestic workers and nannies have been normalized by a certain class and generation. When I talk to a female acquaintance, who works in a Roma art gallery, about my mixed feelings about <em>Roma<\/em>\u2019s viewpoint and Cleo\u2019s storyline, she matter-of-factly counters \u201cbut we all had them. That\u2019s how it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Roma <\/em>also reminded me of some classic Mexican films. In the interview with Solorzano, Cuar\u00f3n condemns the Manichean vision of most Mexican Golden Age cinema films: \u201cI cannot stand the folkloric (folclorismo) of films like those of Indio [Emilio] Fern\u00e1ndez, where in addition indigenous people (los indios) were interpreted by whites.\u201d Despite the casting of an \u201cautochtonous\u201d female lead, <em>Roma<\/em> does not avoid altogether the aesthetic and ideological ties to the Mexican cinema it ostensibly rejects. Tellingly, and unsurprisingly, those rave Mexican reviews I previously mentioned connect Cuar\u00f3n to Luis Bu\u00f1uel instead, as well as to other European auteurs (Fellini, DeSica, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>What to make of <em>Roma<\/em>\u2019s intersection of two modes of Mexican \u201cauthenticity\u201d: Yalitza Aparicio as a dark-skinned indigenous \u201cnon-actress\u201d representing \u201ctrue\u201d Mexico and Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n as a light-skinned transnational auteur presenting his \u201cmost personal story\u201d? Media coverage of Yalitza Aparicio, the performer, has arguably had a much stronger impact than Cleo, the character, especially her glamour shots at film festivals and her groundbreaking cover in <em>Vogue Mexico<\/em>. The star discourse around Yalitza Aparicio invites reflection in relation to actors like M\u00f3nica del Carmen, Ariel award winner for <em>A\u00f1o bisiesto<\/em> (Michael Rowe, 2010), or Tenoch Huerta, star of <em>G\u00fceros<\/em> (Alonso Ruizpalacios, 2015), who both spoke out against Mexican racism in a 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/internacional\/2017\/06\/29\/mexico\/1498692599_341796.html?fbclid=IwAR3hrcBQMMu4XKI2xNnhH2-TFT3Abm58KkrkfXlpQnu7D27FVJB583Rd4wE\">video<\/a>. The uncritical love some have shown for Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n and <em>Roma<\/em> also invites reflection on the (unbearable?) whiteness of Mexican film studies, whether the scholar is Mexican or not.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Roberto Carlos Ortiz is an independent scholar and regular contributor to Medi\u00e1tico.
