The projects selected for publication here all involve writing, but they may also explore the relationship between writing and photography, visual arts, film or video.<\/p>\n<p>Our contributors, who include new and established writers, artists and poets, embrace the concept of life-writing as a project. They work here within a set of self-imposed constraints, in order, as Michael Sheringham puts it, \u2018to allow something unforeseen to happen\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The experiments with new forms of life writing that we publish here are grouped under headings \u2013 clothes, body, books and place. As these titles suggest, gender, sexuality and social class are explored in these representations of contemporary lives, but perhaps the most striking (and unexpected) common theme is loss and grief. In <a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/lifewritingprojects\/clothes\/wardrobe-diaries-by-louise-kenward\/\"><em>Wardrobe Diaries<\/em> <\/a>Louise Kenward grieves for her grandmother by working with her dresses and old wardrobe; T<a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/lifewritingprojects\/extracts-from-the-wild-patience-scrolls\/\">anya Shadrick connects her grandmother<\/a>\u2019s loving and playful care for her as a child with her own newly discovered capacity to be creative. <a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/lifewritingprojects\/back-to-the-beach\/\">Katherine Collins revisits the beaches of her childhood<\/a>, connecting present and past, while Jenni Cresswell\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/lifewritingprojects\/back-to-the-beach\/\"><em>Three Green Dresses<\/em><\/a> almost literally threads together past, present and future. Tom Ottway works through his own and his mother\u2019s grief for his father in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/lifewritingprojects\/place\/negative-spaces-postcards-home-by-tom-ottway\/\">Negative Spaces: Postcards Home<\/a>, <\/em>and <a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/lifewritingprojects\/place\/nirmal-puwar\/\">Nirmal Puwar laments not only the loss <\/a>of close relatives but austerity\u2019s legacy of neglect and deterioration in inner city Coventry where she grew up and lives again now. In <a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/lifewritingprojects\/body\/the-uses-of-photography-by-annie-ernaux\/\"><em>The Uses of Photography<\/em> <\/a>Annie Ernaux and Marc Marie make a literary project out of their erotic relationship and Annie\u2019s treatment for breast cancer, defying death and grief. Similarly, in the poetry, prose and photographs of <a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/lifewritingprojects\/body\/breastless-encounters-with-risk-reducing-surgery-by-clare-best\/\"><em>Breastless: Encounters with risk-reducing surgery<\/em><\/a> Clare Best tracks her journey through grief and loss to a new physical shape and powerfully creative identity. In<a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/lifewritingprojects\/clothes\/campus-blouse-by-lyn-thomas\/\"><em> The \u2018Campus\u2019 Blouse<\/em>,<\/a> Lyn Thomas describes the uncertainties and disorientation of arriving in Oxford from a working-class background, and the pleasure of at least looking the part. In all of these pieces, the playful aspect of making a life writing<em> project <\/em>becomes a source of resistance and resilience.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/lifewritingprojects\/books\/introduction\/\">Books<\/a> section of the site our project is to explore the role of encounters with books and reading in life history narratives. We are delighted to publish an <a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/lifewritingprojects\/books\/much-ado-books\/\">audio recording of bookshop browsers\u2019 memories <\/a>of favourite books made at independent bookshop Much Ado Books in Alfriston, Sussex. In <a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/lifewritingprojects\/being-susan\/\">Desperately Seeking Susan<\/a>, Lyn Thomas reflects on her childhood reading of Jane Shaw&#8217;s Susan books, and her return to them in later life. Alexandra Loske&#8217;s contribution on reading Emily Bront\u00eb will follow soon.<\/p>\n<p>Life Writing Projects is a new collaboration between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/clhlwr\/\">The Centre for Life History and Life Writing Research<\/a> (CLHLWR) and <a href=\"http:\/\/reframe.sussex.ac.uk\/\">REFRAME<\/a>.
