When we came together for Yom HaShoah, the anniversary of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen, the end of World War II, and to mark other events including Hiroshima, Kristallnacht, the 25th anniversary of the Bosnian Genocide and more, our meetings were online not in-person. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As many of us face strict lockdown restrictions in early 2021, Holocaust Memorial Day on 27th January must this year be <strong>commemorated online<\/strong>. The Holocaust education programmes that usually complement events must all be produced as <strong>distant learning experiences.<\/strong> Taking a step away from research reflections, this blog post offers a range of recommended resources to support distant learning and memorialisation activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>We will keep adding to this blog post as new content becomes available, do let us know if you&#8217;re doing something that can be added.<\/strong><\/em> <em><strong>We are only including web-based resources here, as they are accessible on most devices.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Holocaust Educational Trust offers advice for teachers about age-appropriate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.het.org.uk\/hmd-2021\">content for primary and secondary pupils<\/a>. It is worth starting here before planning activities. The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance also provides guidelines about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.holocaustremembrance.com\/resources\/educational-materials\/ihra-recommendations-teaching-and-learning-about-holocaust\">teaching and learning about the Holocaust<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Holocaust History<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>International Holocaust Memorial Day<\/strong> marks the liberation of Auschwitz on the <strong>27th January. <\/strong>The State Museum has a variety of <a href=\"http:\/\/auschwitz.org\/en\/education\/e-learning\/\">education<\/a> and commemorative resources available. You can also take part in a <a href=\"http:\/\/panorama.auschwitz.org\/tour1,3636,en.html\">virtual tour of the site<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>University College London&#8217;s Centre for Holocaust Education have created a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.holocausteducation.org.uk\/teacher-resources\/post-it-online-courses\/\">online learning resources about the Holocaust<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several institutions collaborated on the <strong>Google Arts and Culture<\/strong> exhibition <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/artsandculture.google.com\/project\/the-holocaust\">Stories of the Holocaust.<\/a><\/strong> You can find a wide range of <a href=\"https:\/\/artsandculture.google.com\/search?q=Holocaust&amp;hl=en\">Holocaust-related exhibitions and collections<\/a> on the platform too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can take a &#8216;digital glimpse&#8217; inside <strong>Anne Frank&#8217;s House<\/strong> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.annefrank.org\/en\/museum\/web-and-digital\/frank-family-home-360-degrees\/\">Museum&#8217;s 360 project.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers at University College London have put together an exhibition <a href=\"https:\/\/compromised-identities.org\/\"><strong>&#8216;Compromised Identities&#8217;<\/strong><\/a> that encourages visitors to think critically about how individuals became perpetrators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/exhibits\/forgotten-victims\">Forgotten Victims: The Nazi Genocide of the Roma and Sinti <\/a><\/strong>in this virtual exhibition from the United Nation&#8217;s We encourage learners, teachers and researchers to explore the impact it had beyond. The website of the<a href=\"https:\/\/jewishdetaineesmauritius.com\/\"> Beau Bassin Memorial<\/a> offers an introduction to the experience of <strong>Jewish refugees detained under British authority in Mauritius<\/strong> during World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum<\/strong> has also constructed a web page, which includes archival documents about the <a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopedia.ushmm.org\/content\/en\/article\/polish-jewish-refugees-in-the-shanghai-ghetto-19411945\">experiences of Polish Jews in the Shanghai Ghetto<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reflections on Memory<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Paul Salmons<\/strong> offers some reflections on <a href=\"https:\/\/paulsalmons.associates\/blog\/holocaust-memory\">how secure is Holocaust memory<\/a> and what it means to <a href=\"https:\/\/paulsalmons.associates\/blog\/what-does-it-mean-to-learn-about-the-holocaust\">learn about the Holocaust<\/a>, beyond moral lessons. These are particularly pertinent questions given the visibility of antisemitic references to the Holocaust that circulated across the world from the images of the Capitol insurrection in January 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can explore how the Holocaust is commemorated in Argentina by booking onto an <a href=\"https:\/\/museodelholocausto.org.ar\/recorridovirtual360\/\">online tour of the Museo del Holocausto<\/a> or in Australia, with a virtual tour of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jhc.org.au\/education\/virtual-learning\/virtual-tour\/\">Jewish Holocaust Centre in Melbourne<\/a> (there is no need to book for this). I would recommend <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/OrlyYadinSylvieBringasSilence\">Silence<\/a> <\/strong><\/em>and <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/i_was_a_child_of_holocaust_survivors\/\">I was a Child of Holocaust Survivors. <\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Learning about other Genocides<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, UK<\/strong>, has a series of learning resources about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmd.org.uk\/learn-about-the-holocaust-and-genocides\/\">different genocides<\/a>. <strong>Facing History, Facing Ourselves <\/strong>also provide a range of resources that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facinghistory.org\/topics\/genocide-mass-violence\">cover a number of genocides<\/a>, and explore issues like journalism and witnessing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Visual History Archive<\/strong> includes testimonies from the Holocaust, &#8216;as well as the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/sfi.usc.edu\/collections\/armenian\" target=\"_blank\">Armenian Genocide<\/a>&nbsp;that coincided with World War I, the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/sfi.usc.edu\/collections\/nanjing\" target=\"_blank\">1937 Nanjing Massacre in China<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/sfi.usc.edu\/collections\/cambodian\" target=\"_blank\">Cambodian Genocide of 1975-1979<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/sfi.usc.edu\/collections\/guatemalan\" target=\"_blank\">Guatemalan Genocide of 1978-1983<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/sfi.usc.edu\/collections\/rwandan\" target=\"_blank\">1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda<\/a>, and the ongoing conflicts in the Central African Republic and South Sudan, and anti-Rohingya mass violence.
